Now Amarta understood Tayre’s warning: people stared at the three of them with looks of revulsion and shock, then looked away the moment they came near. As the trio passed, Tadesh well-hidden in the backpack, they looked back, pointing and whispering.

“We’re attracting attention,” she said softly.

“Keep the disguise for now,” Tayre replied. “Descriptions of us will travel east, where they will meet word from the Xanmelkie valley of the seer who broke the pendulum. Those tales will need to find the hunters, who must decide if we are the same people or not. That will slow them down a bit.”

Olessio gave Amarta a look. “Could we be three men traveling together?”

Tayre shook his head. “She wouldn’t fool them for a moment.”

Amarta felt self-conscious and stubborn. “I could learn how.”

“Yes, with a month to train you. But to anyone who knows what to look for, it’ll be obvious that you’re attempting a disguise, and then you’ll really stand out.”

Olessio turned an eye on Tayre. “Obvious to those who see as you do, Guard-dog. But you’re rather uncommon. How many of your type are we likely to meet?”

Tayre looked at the road ahead. “It only takes one.”
